Wild Speculation
While Project Wonderful has been a big success in the webcomics world, there's a lot of territory left to cover.

(contributed by Matthew Skala)
Project Wonderful's prices are low, but I don't think most users realize just how low they actually are. I did some comparisons between ads on PW sites and other similar ads sold through conventional channels, and the results are pretty clear: the same ad space sold through PW will command a much lower price. That's awesome for buyers, but it's not so awesome for sellers - which is why I'm listing this under the "Selling" topic. A site that could sell its ads some other way isn't going to want to switch to PW if it means accepting pennies on the dollar of the ad revenue it would otherwise get, and I think that's why PW hasn't become very popular with the big, high-traffic sites yet. Those sites often don't price things in terms of CPD like PW does, but for comparison I'm going to attempt to compute CPD for a range of sites. Let's see what we get. Half-Banner Adverts now available
A quick post to say that half-banner (234*60) adverts are now available for creation on Project Wonderful! As of right now, there aren't any half-banner ads available to bid on yet - jump in and be among the first!
How can Project Wonderful compete with Google AdWords?
There's no doubt by now that for the webcomics industry, Project Wonderful beats the Google competitor hands down. But it still lacks a few things that Google can offer - things that, if they were implemented, could persuade more advertisers to sign up.
While it's nice to have other webcomics advertised on your site and it's wonderful to be part of such an indie community, I think it'd be great if we could get some big businesses to invest some of their mammoth advertising budget into our system. So, how do we persuade them to come and give us their money? Hit "Read More" for some of my thoughts, and don't be shy to comment with your own. Custom "Your Ad Here" graphics are now available!
In the past hour, a much-requested feature has been implemented in Project Wonderful. Publishers can now upload a custom graphic to take the place of the "Your Ad Here" image, used when there are no active bids on an ad slot.
I've made half a dozen button images for folks to use if they so wish; feel free to use these in place of the standard "Your Ad Here" graphics. A link back to projectwonderfultalk.com is appreciated, but not necessary. I am releasing these buttons into the Public Domain! Hit "Read More" to get them. (EDIT - make that half a dozen banner images and leaderboards, too) |
